All is not lost!<\/strong> Soon after the fire, the National Museum\u2019s Scientific Collections Rescue Center was created and, thanks to the intense work of a multidisciplinary team, thousands of objects of great historical and scientific importance were rescued.

BENDEG\u00d3 WITHSTANDS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The public remembers well that imposing meteorite, which impressed everyone, right at the Palace\u2019s entrance. Weighing 5.6 tons, Bendeg\u00f3 withstood the fire<\/strong> and will still be much observed by researchers and visitors.Information as legend: <\/em>Bendeg\u00f3 was found in 1784, in Bahia\u2019s inland. In 1887, Dom Pedro II made efforts to bring it to Rio de Janeiro, with support from the Brazilian Geography Society. After nearly a year traveling, the meteorite arrived at the National Museum.<\/p>\n\n

LUZIA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

One of the items most loved by the public is Luzia, the oldest woman in the Americas ever found. Her skeleton pieces were discovered in 1975, in the city of Pedro Leopoldo (MG). In the week following the fire at the Museum, parts of Luzia\u2019s skull and femur <\/strong> were rescued. <\/p>\n\n

    More highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    • The Egyptian Collection<\/strong> is once again the largest in Latin America<\/li>
    • Almost the entire Meteorite <\/strong> collection has been preserved<\/li>
    • Several pieces of Brazilian Archeology<\/strong> were rescued<\/li>
    • 80% of the Paleovertebrates <\/strong>(prehistoric fossils) collection has been rescued<\/li>
    • 07 collections of the Museum<\/strong> were in the buildings of the Botanical Garden and were not affected<\/strong><\/li>
    • 13 collections <\/strong>had items rescued<\/li>
    • 2,500 tons of rubble<\/strong> were removed from the Palace, a volume equivalent to two statues of Christ the Redeemer<\/li><\/ul>\n\n
