Museu Nacional participates in the 34th Bienal de São Paulo

Museu Nacional/UFRJ participates in the event with collections rescued from the fire

Museu Nacional is participating in the 34th Bienal de Artes de São Paulo, which starts on September 5th, with three very special pieces. The idea is that, from the creation of partnerships, such as the one signed between the Museu Nacional and the 34th Bienal de Artes de São Paulo, other pieces rescued after the fire in September 2018, may integrate, for a certain period, spaces in museums and galleries in Brazil, bringing culture, science and knowledge to the population through dialogue. The items selected to participate in the event are the Santa Luzia meteorite, a citrine stone and a ritxòkò doll.

Director Alexander Kellner highlights the importance of this partnership with the Bienal’s producers: “The National Museum is delighted to participate in this important event, with international repercussion, through the partnership signed with the organizers. Museu Nacional participates with pieces that were rescued from the palace. It is very important for us to demonstrate how the union of different institutions contributes to the advancement of culture in our country.”.

The general curator of the 34th Bienal, Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, explains the process of choosing the pieces and the meaning of the show “The statements, as they are being called, are elements from other environments, not necessarily within the scope of art, and can be objects, images and ideas that come from other contexts and carry stories very strong and powerful. The idea is that these elements help to think about the exhibition, to read the works that are physically placed close to these statements in very specific ways. We do not want to impose a reading of the works, but suggest possible readings. Therefore, we did not want to use strategy or conventional elements of an exhibition, hence the pieces”.

VALE, one of the platinum sponsors of the Museu Nacional Vive Project, also sponsors the 34th Bienal de São Paulo. Luiz Eduardo OsorioExecutive Vice-President of Vale Institution and Communication Relation and President of the Instituto Cultural Vale Board, says that “The Museu Nacional lives in its restoration work, educative projects, and social mobilization; and the meetings and dialogues with its audience, like this partnership with the 34th São Paulo Art Biennial. The Instituto Cultural Vale is proud to be part of the Project Museu Nacional Lives and sponsor the São Paulo Biennial, one of the leading international artistic events. The objects from the Museum’s collection exhibited at the Biennial helps to tell a story of resilience and life. And, from this meeting, others possibilities arise; art, culture, science, and education”.
