The installation of the skylight at the Museu Nacional begins

The restoration work at the Paço de São Cristóvão, the headquarters of f the Museu Nacional/UFRJ, is progressing at a fast pace. In recent days, more than 5 tons of beams and pillars have been lifted to form the base of the future skylight above the staircase courtyard.

The skylight is one of the innovative features in the architectural and restoration project of the Museum and has already received approval from the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan). The assembly plan and its execution comply with all standards regarding technical quality, safety for workers, and risk management for the heritage.

The covering of the staircase courtyard was a priority and necessity even before the fire. It will help preserve the staircase, installed in the early 20th century, which was previously exposed to the elements, causing damage to its finishes. The new structure will also enhance visitor comfort, enable climate control in the area, and aid in the conservation of ornaments and collections that may be displayed in the space.
