SOCIAL MOBILIZATION TO REBUILD THE MUSEUM

To expand the potential for raising the resources needed to rebuild the National Museum (MN), the Friends of the National Museum Association (SAMN) is authorized by the UFRJ to seek sponsorship for the restoration, works and projects of the bicentennial institution of great scientific and cultural relevance. Sponsors can even count on tax incentives for support, in accordance with the rules and procedures of the Special Secretariat for Culture of the Ministry of Tourism.

The Museu Nacional Vive Project is the result of technical cooperation between UFRJ, UNESCO and Vale Cultural institute. The initiative bets on social mobilization and permanent articulation of partnerships with public, private and third sector institutions to reopen the Museum as soon as possible.

To date, the Project has been sponsored by Vale, Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), Ministry of Education (MEC), Federal Bench of Rio de Janeiro, Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), receiving support from countries like Germany and Austria, besides British and American bodies.

SAMN is an important partner of the Project. Founded on 13/1/1937, it became the first association of friends of a Brazilian museum. Since then, it has watched over the cultural heritage of the National Museum, enriching its collections, assisting in expeditions and scientific projects, among other academic and cultural initiatives. Currently, it is structured under the terms of the new Civil Code, and its Board of Directors is composed of civil servants, teachers and administrative technicians working at the National Museum/UFRJ. The Association created an account to receive donations from individuals as well, who also can be SAMN partners.
